THE DESCENDANTS

Directed By Alexander Payne

Production Designed by Jane Ann Stewart

The Descendants came up at a time when I had been on hiatus from the film industry. The film was done and Alexander asked me to create the art for the map animation. That task led to doing the opening and end title animations. The art for the title ultimately became the art for the marketing package.  I wanted to create a smooth, meandering look for the titles. I decided on a graphic expression of hibiscus flowers floating by.  It often took hours to render the animations which led to long days in front of the screen. But it was worth the effort. The film was highly successful and won several awards. It also reignited my desire to do film.

Motion graphics are a time consuming and mentally exhausting activity. Photoshop x Time = Motion Graphics. To me it is totally worth it. A graphic by itself has value, but add motion, whether it's done in front of a camera or done digitally brings these things to life. They become a living thing. That is the biggest buzz that I get from this work. When something I did takes up the screen it's the next best thing to being on screen myself. I was also nominated along with the Key Art Department for an ADG Award!
